Wildlife

Small game abounds on the farm, but being wild, they are quite shy and elusive. The animals stay far from any humans, so none of them pose any danger to visitors. The wildlife includes various small buck, serval cats, caracals, hares, otters, and monkeys. Migrant wild horses also spend time on the farm, where they come regularly to drink from the dam and eat the sweet green grass. We have purposely removed all boundary fences, to allow the wild animals as much free range as possible.

Birdlife abounds. The rock cliffs are home to beautiful swooping swallows and martens, while eagles glide overhead. Fish Eagles and Hamerkops hunt the rivers and dams, and a family of nesting plovers returns year after year to the dam to raise their young. The endangered Blue Cranes come every year to the farm in late summer/autumn, and you may also see a pair of large Secretary Birds, which hunt small rodents in the grasslands. Of course we hope you spot the Nkwali (Red Winged Francolin), which the farm is named after.

There are fascinating small creatures to look out for too, like busy dung beetles or brightly coloured grasshoppers, and camouflaged lizards sunning themselves on the rocks.
