Eco-Design

Come and live simply and gently on the earth, away from city hustle & bustle. Nkwali Lodge was designed by a passionate eco‐architect. It was built onto a small group of stone ruins which were destroyed by fire and then rebuilt and added-to over two years, with much care and attention to detail.

The people who built the cottages were craftspeople, active in the design and decision-making and proud of their art. As many natural materials as possible were used, all gathered on or near the site to blend in with the surroundings. The stone is from the farm, and the thatching grasses are from nearby farms. All trees and plants were retained.

The water comes from a natural spring on the property, and is clean and sweet. There is no electricity at the cottages, so the rooms are lit at night with many paraffin lamps, which create a lovely romantic atmosphere. The hot water comes from a combination of gas
geysers and donkey boilers. The wood that is burnt in the fireplaces and donkey boilers is alien wattle, gathered from specially retained coppices on the farm.

Guests are amazed to learn that the toilets in the lodge are compost toilets, (they are odorless and work so well that many guests say they want one in their own home). You can enjoy the knowledge that when you are using them, you will be enhancing the soil, and not
compromising the groundwater or rivers.

All in all, the experience of a holiday at Nkwali should leave you feeling in touch with the earth. The accommodation is luxuriously comfortable while at the same time grounding your body and taking you back to nature.
