Accommodation

Nkwali Lodge is a self catering lodge, consisting of a small grouping of thatch buildings, architect designed to create a cosy village atmosphere. The entire lodge consists of 3 suites (each of the suites sleeps 2) which are totally private with full en‐suite bathrooms. The communal areas include the kitchen, dining room, lounge and lapa, and a large outdoor area to encourage relaxed interaction. The Lodge is only let out to one group at a time. The three double bedrooms each have queen sized beds. The bedding is all cotton, with feather duvets and pillows, big fluffy blankets and hot water bottles in the winter.

Each bedroom has a full en‐suite bathroom, attached to the bedroom by a small walled private courtyard with an outdoor shower. Inside, the bathrooms are spacious, with a custom made chaise longue to relax on, a unique toilet, hand crafted to resemble a regal throne, and a reclaimed antique ball‐and‐claw bath. The towels are big and fluffy. Your bath water must be warmed with a donkey boiler, which can be lit in the morning about an hour before you bath, and will then provide enough heat to last through to the night. The firewood is all laid out in the boiler before your arrival, so you need only to light it when you need it.

A communal lounge, kitchen and dining room forms the social hub of the little village. The dining room has a big 8-seater table and a fireplace ready to light. The lounge is comfortable and casual, with big couches and a comfy fatsak (over-sized beanbag), leading onto a covered veranda with a stunning view.

The kitchen has granite counters and a gas stove and oven, and is fully stocked for self catering (including a stove top toaster and kettle). You need only bring groceries (the nearest shops are 25km’s away). There are two fridges in the kitchen, both 100 litre bar fridges with small freezers on top. The geyser and fridges are run on gas. There is a lapa set slightly lower than the house, and walled to protect you on windy nights. It has a braai, a fireplace and an antique bread/pizza oven. You will receive enough firewood to braai every day.

What To Bring

  • All bedding and towels are supplied, including swimming towels.
  • The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering.
  • Bring your groceries from Johannesburg as the nearest shops are 25km away and quite sparse.
  • Alternatively, buy groceries en route at Highveld Mall Witbank, situated just off the N4, which has a Pick and Pay, Woolworths etc.
  • Bring your swimming costumes, walking shoes, hats, binoculars, reading material and fishing rods.
  • If you love mountain biking, bring your bikes.
  • Bring your own charcoal if you plan to braai a lot (some firewood will be provided – enough for one braai every day).
  • Bring Tabard if you plan to sit outside at night. The lodge is not in a malaria area, but mosquitos and moths will come into your room at night if you leave the lights on and the door open. Just be sure to close your doors and windows at sunset and only open windows again when you turn the lights out.
  • All life on Nkwali is treasured, so please don’t bring insect killer.
